Are witches always the evil ones? From the likes of Rara Jonggrang and Calon Arang, the negative accusations against these characters in Javanese mythologies have always been unsettling. However, were these characters truly guilty, or were they forced take the wrongful blame upon themselves?

Sirap Wadon is birthed from a desire to deconstruct female representation in these mythologies. Sirap Wadon tries to build a new mythos to reclaim the “magic” a woman bear as their empowering force. Femininity is a woman’s magic—sirap wadon—from which these witches gain power.
